  5. What's new in WinZip 5.0 Beta RC1

  7. - Built-in zipping
  8. - Support Windows-based virus scanners.  Two scanners are
  9.   automatically detected by WinZip:
  10.     NAVW, distributed with Norton Desktop for Windows 2.2
  11.     WNAPVIR, distributed with Central Point Desktop for Windows
  12.   The MWAV.EXE scanner distributed with MS-DOS 6.0 is not supported
  13.   because it does not provide command line switches for automation
  14.   PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU TRY A DIFFERENT WINDOWS BASED VIRUS SCANNER!
  15. - New icon (comments on the new icon are welcome).
  16. - File/Information... dialog box (shortcut: click on status line)
  17. - Built-in unzipping is used when running DOS virus scanners
  18. - Added built-in Actions/Test for zip files, so PKUNZIP is not needed.
  19.   (Note: you can force WinZip to use PKUNZIP for the Test operation by
  20.   holding the shift key while selecting Actions/Test.)
  21. - Multiple WinZip windows (instances) can now use the built-in unzipping
  22.   (and zipping) at the same time (4.1 runs PKUNZIP for the second instance).
  23. - Internal unzipping is now used when fileids are specified in the
  24.   Extract dialog box (earlier versions used PKUNZIP in this situation).
  25. - The "Optional Working Directory" in the "Directories" dialog box can
  26.   now be used for removable media only.  By default the "Optional
  27.   Working Directory" is set to your temp directory and is used for
  28.   removable media only.  Press F1 in the "Directories" dialog box for
  29.   more information.
  30. - The Checkout features now uses subdirectory information in archives
  31. - Clicking on an inactive WinZip window does not activate abort dialog
  32.   during zip or unzip operation - you must activate the window THEN click
  33.   on it to get the abort dialog box.
  34. - The extract operation will now issue an error message if you try to overlay
  35.   a file that is "in use" by Windows, even if SHARE is not loaded.
  36.   For example, you can't accidentally replace the copy of WINZIP.EXE
  37.   that you are running, as this could cause a crash.
  38. - Zero length ZIP files opened correctly
  39. - Built-in unzipping now creates zero length files when appropriate
  40. - Build-in unzip handles hidden subdirectories
  41. - The text of default button in the "Add" and "Drop" dialog boxes
  42.   reflects the selected action (Add, Freshen, Update, or Move).
  43. - Better sorting (e.g. sort by type also sorts by name)
  44. - Extract combo lists directories in uppercase/lowercase per Config dialog
  45. - Optional beep now only sounds if archive operation took over one second
  46. - If no CheckOut Base Directory is specified and the archive is on a floppy
  47.   WinZip suggests the Temp directory as the Checkout base directory.
